Sunday 25 September – Walking, travelling, sightseeing **** sunny
We had a lovely leisurely start to our morning in Belcastel. We had a
shower too – a bit cool to be perfect but not as cold as we thought :)
Had our muesli and Mag did a couple of bits and pieces on the computer,
visited the bank and paid the visa off. It’s never b een paid it so
early, it only came in yesterday but wanted to know it was done on a secure
internet connection, then I had ago and the connection disappeared :( We
went for another wander in the village and down to a lovely gite next door
to a mill. We chatted to an English couple who live in the Lot valley who
had come to visit on their motorbike. Walked back to the van and had lunch
before leaving for our next destination. To start with we were twiddling
along all these country lanes with beautiful scenery and lots of lovely
cows and calves but didn’t seem to be getting very far so put flossy (
Miss Satnav to you) on and we ended up virtually back where we started!
Anyway, went off towards Rodez and apart from her sending us wrong yet
again we got through there ok and made our way through some lovely roads
towards a reservoir called Lac de Villefranche de Panet . When we got
there however, it was dry! There was only a little water in the middle and
there was a boat high and dry around the edge. Just brown mud basically.
We saw a sign post up to a tower on the hill – Tour De Peyrebrune and
decided to go and have a look and it was really good. We actually paid 2
Euros each to go up to the platform at the top of the tower for the views.
It was a lovely building which had been thoughtfully restored. There was a
circular walk from the top so we decided to do that as it was only half an
hour. There were lots of fir trees, some amazing red capped mushrooms and
some amazing boulders – a bit like Brimham rocks in Yorkshire – as if
they had been picked up and dropped there (probably were by the ice age or
some such). We carried on by-passing the disappointing reservoir and
making our way towards the Tarn river. As we went round the windy roads we
went over a hill and were gob-smacked at the view – mile upon mile of
rolling hills all different colours with fields, red rock, green trees etc.
Absolutely stunning. There was a viewing point so we stopped there for a
cuppa. There was a map so I decided our route and set Flossie to aim for
Breusse le Chateau, the roads were hilarious really twisty and at one point
she wanted us to cut the loop off one road by going down a virtually
vertical farm drive! We didn’t luckily and just go an extra 100 yards on
the road. (Mag has now turned flossie off now because she doesn’t know
left from right!!!) We got there and parked very quickly right on the side
of the river again just below yet another old town up on a hill with bell
tower and castle. We walked away from the town, thinking we would go up
there tomorrow, and along the footpath along the river. It was wonderful,
well worn but not easy paths which lead to a beautiful weir of large rocks
with a man fishing in the pool made when the river went round the corner.
We really enjoyed the walk and saw at least 4 herons but had to turn back
at that point because we were worried we wouldn’t get back before it got
dark. Here it is just like a light being switched off and it goes from
twilight to pitch black very quickly and that wasn’t the path to navigate
in the dark! We got back in just 20 minutes amazingly and made a quick tea
of cassoulet (lentils and pork this time). I went to take photos of the
lit up village in the dark from the bridge but Mag stayed in the van and
did her diary!!!
